The story of Wilder Mansion begins long before it became a sought-after event venue.
Prior to its acquisition by the Elmhurst Park District in 1921, the land was lovingly cultivated and landscaped by prominent families in Elmhurst. The property's development as a garden oasis traces back to 1868 when Seth Wadhams transformed a treeless farm known as "Burnhams Lot" into a stately home named "White Birch."
Over time, the mansion exchanged hands between the King, Wilder, and other families, until the Elmhurst Park District purchased the estate in 1921.
The mansion underwent several transformations, including the addition of an Elmhurst Library branch on its first floor in 1922.
In 1936, a significant renovation project altered the mansion's exterior, introducing pillars and a south wing while removing partitions on the second floor. A second expansion took place in 1965, leaving its mark on the mansion's evolving history.
A Commitment to Preservation
In the mid-1990s, discussions emerged regarding the future of Wilder Mansion. As the Elmhurst Library contemplated building a new facility, an intergovernmental committee was formed to explore alternative uses for the mansion.
After careful consideration and community input, the Elmhurst Park Board decided on a path that preserved the mansion's historic architectural features while addressing the needs of the community. This included removing the 1960s addition and renovating the original 1860s portion of the mansion, ensuring its continued legacy as a historical landmark.
Today, the meticulously restored Wilder Mansion stands as a testament to this commitment to preservation. ADA compliant and expanded to offer multi-use space, the mansion retains its historical allure while providing modern amenities and accommodations for a variety of events.
